Belcarra Park Playground Phase 2

In 2007, the main play area in the playground was dismantled and replaced with a new modern structure. The new structure follows a ‘fort and nature’ theme that fits with the park and is geared toward children ages 5-12. There are two slides, many climbing features, nature themed activity panels, and large platforms that will accommodate a number of children at the same time.

Phase 2 provides us with the opportunity to provide a play area that will be accessible by all children including those with limited mobility and individuals in wheelchairs. All children should have the opportunity to use our playground regardless of physical ability.

Play components designed for wheelchair accessibly are great for ensuring all children can be active within the park. The wider stairs and rubber surfacing make it easier to access the area. The components make it fun for toddlers, parents and grandparents to join in as well. The design of the components enables many children to use the structure at the same time promoting group play.

There are many components that are wheelchair accessible and would fit with the structures already on site. The Buddy Bus, Tandem Bounce, Biggo Swing, and activity panels are some of these components.

The surfacing material in the play area is an important part of any playground. Material used in the playground is engineered wood carpeting which provides a cost effective safety surfacing. A wheelchair accessible surface, such as rubber, is recommended for portions of Phase 2. Rubber surfacing is more expensive but meets the accessibility needs of children in wheelchairs.
